Henri Verdier tells his wife Thérèse how his first wife cheated on him with a double, and his second with a sultan. One evening, unexpectedly returning home, he discovers Thérèse in the arms of a cardinal. The latter, using the authority of the costume, convinces Henri to accept this third adultery. But the poor husband does not suspect that his interlocutor is an actor in stage costume.
