Peter is an orphan that the Gogan family ignominiously exploits, after having bought him as an object for little money. But the boy has a protector: Elliott, a green dragon who sometimes even manifests himself in front of strangers. One day, backed by his gigantic friend, Peter evades the Gogans" searches and reaches the seaside village of Passamaquody where, due to some clumsy intervention by Elliott, he is greeted in a malevolent way. He finds hospitality at the lighthouse of Lamp, the drunken keeper, and befriends Nora. Assisted by Gnocco, dr. Terminus, a trickster who, realizing the situation, attempts a double blow: to return Peter to the Gogans and take Elliott to exploit his limbs in the package of expensive and miraculous medicines. In this situation, Elliott"s abilities are put to the test: he saves himself from Terminus and Peter from the Gogans, remedies the failure of the lighthouse, allowing Paul, Nora"s boyfriend, to happily touch land after a year of sailing. By now the people of Passamaquody consider Peter one of them and Elliott their providence. But the dragon is forced to leave because, in another part of the world, there is another child in distress.
